I have some charities and organizations that I have agreements with for free or reduced rate work. And as you mentioned, they are organizations that are in line with my values. However, to work for someone for free in hopes that they’ll hire me one day is not something I’m interested in doing. My guess is if I turned the tables on them and ask for whatever product or service they were promoting for free they’d laugh at me. In that case, my point is proven!
